Multiple media outlets on 17 April reported that Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Policy Jovan Krkobabic spoke with the Regional Director of UNFPA for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Werner Haug and the Director for the Western Balkans Doina Bologa. Krkobabic expressed his gratitude for the assistance offered, adding that the relevant ministry and the UNFPA have a common goal and that is to provide assistance to all who need it. Haug and Bologa confirmed readiness of the UNFPA to assist in collecting and analysing data that can contribute to a better understanding and prediction of population trends, as well as to support the work of the National Council on Ageing Issues. SERBIA: Unwanted Girls in the Balkans
Rts.rs on 3 January reported that the Balkan countries, due to a preference for male children, are suffering from a surplus of men, which will have dramatic social consequences for the region. BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA: First Part of “My life is my song” Cervical Cancer Campaign Concludes
Multiple media outlets reported on 19-21 April on the successful completion of the first part of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Campaign supported by UNFPA. In addition, reports noted that the four singers of the campaign song, were recognized with Serbia’s Story award for 2011. UNFPA Bosnia and Herzegovina Assistant Representative Faris Hadrovic expressed satisfaction with the results achieved and announced UNFPA’s upcoming plans, including the organization of roundtable meetings on cervical cancer prevention and a partnership with government institutions on developing cervical cancer prevention programmes in the country.
