SWAZILAND: Free Medication For Bogogo, Says PM

The Swazi Observer reported 12 October that The Prime Minister told the hundreds of elderly people gathered at Ludzeludze for the Philani Maswati presentation that the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office was the ministry responsible for issues of the elderly and urged them to visit it whenever they had problems. PHILIPPINES: Pregnant Women Vulnerable In Evacuation Camps

IRIN reported 12 October on the situation of pregnant women evacuated following recent flooding. UNFPA Philippines country director, Suneeta Mukherjee said UNFPA had done rapid assessments of various evacuation camps, and linked up with volunteer organizations, including enlisting the help of an association of midwives, who have been dispatched to selected areas. PARAGUAY: Fourth Feminist Meeting Will Be Held In Paraguay

ABC Color reported 12 October that the city of San Bernardino will be taken over, from 23-25 October, by members of feminist organizations and women across the country to participate in the fourth feminist summit in Paraguay. The Coordination of Women of Paraguay (CMP) is organizing the meeting, along with other women’s organizations and networks, and support from UNIFEM, UNFPA, UNDP and AECI. JAPAN/INDONESIA: Japanese Foreign Minister To Visit Indonesia

Xinhua (China) reported 12 October that Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Katsuya Okada was scheduled to visit Jakarta and quake-affected areas in West Sumatra. UNFPA was among the organizations mentioned as being involved in the rebuilding effort. Read: Xinhua

THE GAMBIA: Insurance Association, Others Give to Disaster Victims

The Daily Observer reported 12 October that the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs received delegations from various institutions, and organizations who were at her office to make donations in kind and cash to the disaster victims in the country. BURKINA FASO: Advocacy Day On Population And Development

Le Pays reported 12 October on an advocacy day organized by the Burkinabe Parliamentarians Network of population and development in order to inform and to sensitize the members of Parliament on population and development. Dr. Olga Sankara, the programme officer of UNFPA/Burkina, who took part in the session, spoke on the challenges facing Burkina’s efforts to reach MDGs 4 and 5.

ARGENTINA: Presentation Of The Book Con Todo al Aire 2

Agencia Popular de Noticias reported 12 October on a workshop presentation of the book, Con Todo Al Aire 2, a report on human rights and reproductive health in public hospitals, published recently by INSGENAR. The book is the result of the continued effort of the Centre for Gender, Health and Human Rights to explain the situation of women’s sexual and reproductive healthcare in public health services. THE INTERNATIONAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT: WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?

The Women’s International Perspective published a blog by Patricia T. Morris, of the NGO Peace X Peace, on 12 October noting that UNFPA estimates that 130 million girls and women around the world have undergone female genital cutting (FGC) and at least 2 million girls every year - nearly 6,000 per day - are at risk of undergoing FGC. UNFPA HOSTS EXHIBITION ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

UN Radio and EFE reported 12 October that a UNPFA-sponsored exhibition on gender-based violence featured “Congo/Women Portraits of War: The Democratic Republic of Congo” and “Women on the Frontline”, a TV series. The exhibition, adds the report, takes place few days after the adoption of a resolution that condemns all kinds of violence against women and girls during armed conflicts. UN RAISES OVER $1 MILLION FOR WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

CIMAC (Mexico) reported 12 October on a gala held in New York under the auspices of UNFPA with the aim of promoting women’s health and dignity.
