Prensa Libre published a column by Ileana Alamilla 13 October reporting that Guatemala fell four positions in the Human Development Index, according to the recent UNDP Human Development Report. LATIN AMERICA/CARIBBEAN: Regional Plan To Eradicate HIV And Syphilis

Newsday (Trinidad and Tobago) reported 13 October on the Regional Initiative for the Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Caribbean has taken the lead and is moving ahead with the involvement of the health sectors of the broader Caribbean with support from the CARICOM Secretariat, PAHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS and UNFPA, under coordination of the PAHO HIV Caribbean Office (PHCO). COVERAGE ON INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON POVERTY ERADICATION AND SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS (SRHR)

EUROPE: Penki News (Lithuania) reported 13 October that the International Workshop on Poverty Eradication and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), taking place from 14-15 October 2009 in Brussels, will evaluate the European Commission contribution to SRHR and discuss lessons learned and ways forward. The programme, which ended in October 2008, provided sexual and reproductive health services and commodities to the most vulnerable and underserved people in 22 ACP countries. LATIN AMERICA: EFE reported 15 October on a meeting organized by the European Commission (EC) in Brussels, Belgium. In Latin America, although the maternal mortality indicators have improved in recent years, they have suffered some stagnation, said Marcela Suazo, Regional Director Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Office of UNFPA. COVERAGE ON ICPD@15 CONFERENCE IN ADDIS ABABA

AFRICA: The Daily Monitor reported 16 October and Xinhua (China) reported 15 October that more than 160 ministers, parliamentarians, and representatives of regional intergovernmental organizations and other world leaders will gather in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia, for a High-Level Meeting on Maternal Health. AFRICA: Afrol News reported 13 October on the week-long conference marking the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in October 2009. The conference, which will be held at ministerial level, is called ICPD@15 and is jointly organized by UNFPA, the African Union Commission (AUC) and UNECA. Read: Afrol News
