TANZANIA: Maternal & Infant Mortality and the MDGs

The Daily News reported on 3 April on Tanzania’s progress toward the MDGs, noting that some 8,100 women die each year due to pregnancy related complications, according to UNFPA. For every 1,000 babies born in a year, 112 die before making their first birthdays. Read: Tanzania Daily News

ETHIOPIA: American Idol Winner David Cook Visits Adolescent Girls’ Program

The Reporter reported on 3 April that Season 7 winner of American Idol David Cook paid a three-day visit to Ethiopia to see the challenges adolescent girls face in many parts of the world. Cook visited the UNFPA-supported Biruh Tesfa (Bright Future) Adolescent Girls Education programme to see firsthand the work of the UN in educating and empowering girls. The visit was organized by one of the donors of UNFPA, the United Nations Foundation. Footage of Cook's trip to Ethiopia will be featured during Idol Gives Back, the Emmy-winning television event and musical celebration developed by American Idol creator Simon Fuller, on 21 April on FOX.
