YEMEN: Yemeni President Praises Role Of Women
Multiple media outlets reported on 9 May that President Ali Abdullah Saleh, attended a ceremony organized by the Yemeni Women’s Union (YWU) on the 20th anniversary of the Unification Day. In the ceremony, the president delivered a speech in which he indicated the concern of the state for woman in education and health as well as in political life. UNFPA representative Zeljka Mudrovcic, gave a speech in the ceremony in which she pointed out the existing cooperation between UNFPA and the YWU in addition to the activities that UNFPA supports including those related to woman and enhancing her role in the society. She also pointed the partnership between UNFPA and YWU for supporting woman activities and reproductive health programmes. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: UNFPA and UNAIDS Directors Visit DRC
Multiple media outlets reported on 8 and 9 May that Thoraya Obaid and Michel Sidibé started their tour of the DRC with meetings with governmental officials and partners, including civil society organizations. At their arrival, both executive directors said they come to get first hand information on the ongoing programmes of cooperation with the DRC , to show support to the authorities on their efforts to fight HIV/AIDs and maternal mortality, and to urge the government and the parliament to make those fights a national priority by devoting more resources to them. COLOMBIA: 500 Pregnant Women Die Due to Failures in Health System
VTV reported on 9 May that more than 500 pregnant women die each year in Colombia for negligence and failures in the quality of the health system, according to a new report is published by UNFPA in Colombia. "There are flaws in the quality of care and there is an inefficient service delivery and the postpartum period," said the representative of UNFPA Colombia, Lucy Wartenberg. Read in Spanish: VTV
