RWANDA: A Revolution In Rights For Women

The Guardian (UK) reported on 28 May on the impact of Rwanda’s increase in female representation in Parliament. "There used to be a lot of rapes, wife beating, male domination of women, boys sent to school and not girls," said Daphrose Nyirasafali, national programme officer for UNFPA, the UN's family planning and reproductive health organisation. NIGERIA: UNFPA to Equip 360 Hospitals

The Punch reported on 28 May that UNFPA is to equip 360 hospitals across the country as part of its current programme of assistance to Nigeria. The Country Representative of the agency, Agathe Lawson, said that a similar hospital project had been executed in Bwari, a satellite of the Federal Capital Territory. Ms. Lawson said the Bwari experience encouraged the agency to expand the project. “With our experience in Bwari, we discovered that the women in the area are now accessing the hospital facility more than they were before we took over the running of the health facility,” she said.
