CUBA: Migration – The “Third World” at a Disadvantage
Radio Rebelde reported on 18 April on migration in the global context of wars, climate change, economic crises, earthquakes and other negative social characteristic patterns that affect people in a given region. The article cited a UNFPA report finding that the continued flow of skilled workers and professionals from developing countries in the South to the industrial North, presents one of the greatest challenges in international migration. MALI: World Young Leaders’ AIDS Summit Held
L’Essor reported on 18 April that the World Young Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS 2011 with support from UNAIDS and UNFPA, ended on 17 April in Bamako, Mali. It was opened by President of the Republic, Amadou Toumani Touré, in the presence of UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé. Among other dignitaries attending, the Crown Princess of Norway who is also a goodwill ambassador of UNAIDS. About 200 young leaders from around the world issued the 2011 Declaration on HIV/AIDS, calling on Heads of State and governments and all leaders to empower young people protect human rights to eliminate stigma and discrimination from legal frameworks, and secure resources and funding for a sustainable response to HIV/AIDS. The Declaration will be presented by Mali’s President at the General Assembly of the UN in New York in June 2011. Read in French: L'Essor
