JORDAN: UNFPA Holds Coordination Meeting with Local Media Institutions
Multiple media outlets reported on 9 July that UNFPA Jordan held a coordination meeting for different local media institutions, to brief them on the following:
- Syrians in Jordan, what UNFPA Jordan CO provided till now and what coming services and support UNFPA will provide, especially in RH issues
- World Population Day 2012, the theme of this year, and ways to cooperate to make this day as successful as previous years
- Jordan’s new country Programme (2013-2017), and the three main focus areas: population dynamics, maternal and newborn health, gender equality and reproductive rights

JORDAN: Seminar on Population Report
Al Arab-Al Yawm reported on 9 July that, in celebration of the World Population Day 2012, the Higher Population Council in cooperation with Talal Abu Ghazaleh forum will conduct a seminar on the Jordan Population Report 2010 , which was prepared by the Higher Population Council in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund in Jordan (UNFPA). This report is considered to be the first comprehensive report that sheds light on the structure, characteristics and historical development of the status of the Jordanian Population. GUINEA-BISSAU: Importance of Data Collection Highlighted
Nô Pintcha reported on 9 July on the celebration of World Population Day. Special focus was placed on the publication of data collected from the 2009 Population and Housing Census. The UN in Guinea-Bissau called on the government and the country’s decision makers to effectively utilize the data collected from the Census 2009 to make the most efficient investments to meet the needs and circumstances of the population and help lift people out of poverty. The Prime Minister, the UNFPA Representative and the UN System Coordinator, highlighted the importance of collecting data as a planning tool for development in their speeches.
NORWAY: Renewed Effort for Women
Dagsavisen on 9 July published a joint op-ed by UNFPA Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin and Norwegian Minister of International Development Heikki Holmås which put focus on the fact that it is possible to save women’s lives with an increased effort to reach MDG5. The piece discussed the challenges faced in reaching women with continuous access to modern family planning and highlights the new initiatives for improved access: The UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities chaired by Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Nigerian President Jonathan Goodluck; and the London Summit on Family Planning. BELARUS: Y-peer Volunteer of the Month Selected

NIGERIA: Start Preparing for 2016 Census Now
The Nigerian Tribune on 9 July reported that, "the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has advised the Federal Government to start early preparations for the 2016 census...UNFPA deputy Representative in Nigeria, Mr Koffi Kouame, who was on courtesy visit to the newly appointed chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Festus Odimegwu, at the NPC headquarters in Abuja said there was need for the Federal Government to start preparations for the 2016 census now to enable UNFPA commence the activities of soliciting for fund for the project from donor agencies."
