LEBANON: Closure of Joint GBV Project in North

Multiple media outlets reported on 13 August on the closure of the UNFPA-supported project entitled "Yes for Facing Violence Together." Implemented by the Safadi Foundation, the project was aimed at raising gender-based violence awareness among residents of old neighbourhoods in Tripoli through the implementation of sensitization events as well as the learning of  basic martial arts skills for empowering women and girls on a psychological, social ad physical level. The project was be implemented in three centers of the  Safadi Foundation. This projects fell within the joint MDG-F Programme on Conflict Prevention and Peace Building in North Lebanon, within which UNFPA is entrusted with the women empowerment and gender component.  Read in Arabic: An Nahar, National News Agency, Al Markazia, Al Wifaq News, Al Bayan

CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE: UNFPA Supports Integration of Indigenous Peoples

Congo-site reported on 13 August on the celebration on World Indigenous Peoples Day in Congo with UNFPA support. Celebrating Indigenous Media, the worldwide theme of the celebration this year, UNFPA Representative David Lawson delivered a message of commitment by UNFPA to strengthen indigenous media to reduce maternal mortality, enhance HIV and sexual violence  prevention.  He said, "UNFPA will strengthen its support to community leaders and peer education so as to save Congolese indigenous peoples from extinction." SENEGAL: Cooperation to Conduct New Census

Le Soleil on 13 August reported on the South-South Cooperation Initiative between Senegal and Brasilia supported by UNFPA’s Senegal and Brasilia Country Office – to conduct the new national census.

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will lend 20,200 PDAs to the National Bureau of Statistics and Demography (ANSD) for the upcoming General Census of Population, Housing, Agriculture and Livestock of Senegal (RGPHAE), which starts in December.

IBGE will also provide additional technical support to the ANSD by sharing its experience in conducting a national census electronically instead of using paper. Read in French: Le Soleil

GABON: Capacity-building Training Held

l’UNION, in its 13 August issue, reported on a five-day capacity-building training on protection and caring for survivors of gender-based violence in Port Gentil. The UNFPA-funded training,  which is part of a nationwide series, urged the police, judiciary, medical personnel and social workers to work  in synergy .

The paper noted the commitment of the workshop participants to ensuring the quality of care and respect for survivors of gender-based violence. Two legal clinics were started with UNFPA support to enhance the quality of care for gender-based violence survivors, the paper stated.
