LEBANON: MP’s intervention on Gender Equality in Lebanon

Several media outlets reported on 18 November on the intervention of Lebanese MP Sami El Gemayel in the “Global dialogue for young parliamentarians” organized by UNFPA and the Asian Forum for Parliamentarians on Population and Development in Thailand. In his speech, MP El Gemayel provided an in-depth analysis of the current situation of women in Lebanon and extensively addressed the obstacles standing in the way of women’s participation and effective gender equality. MP El Gemayel listed the domain where inequality is still flagrant, notably the labour market, in personal status laws, in political representation, in protection from gender-based violence and emphasized the important role of legislators to be more proactive in addressing these obstacles.  MP El Gemayel also addressed the need to lift Lebanon’s reservations on CEDAW.
