URUGUAY: Public Policies to Address Domestic Violence

“Policies” of Canal 5 broadcast on 1 December a special report on domestic violence showing the work that different institutions are developing to address domestic violence in the country. Among the people interviewed, Fernando Filgueira, Assistant Representative of UNFPA, highlighted that domestic violence complaints have increased in the last years, but with the available data it cannot be established whether that happened as a result of an increase of reporting or an increase of domestic violence. As Magdalena Furtado, Gender Officer at UNFPA, explained a proposal submitted by national institutions and the United Nations Country Team in Uruguay was selected by the UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women. This project will work in four areas: review of current legislation, improvement of information systems, territorial implementation of national policies and behavioral change campaigns. But as all cultural changes, she concludes, there is still a long road to eradicate domestic violence. Watch in Spanish: part 1, part 2, part 3 and part 4
