LIBERIA: Skills Training Held for Fistula Survivors

The News reported on 1 April on the completion of a six-month training for fistula survivors sponsored by UNFPA.  UNFPA Representative Esperance Fundira reaffirmed UNFPA’s pledge to work with the Liberian government to end fistula in the country and pointed out that women with fistula endured enormous psychological and social trauma and empowering them to reclaim their place in society is a major goal of UNFPA. During the program, each of the fistula survivors received starter kits as per the skill acquired, US$100 and a cell phone provided by UNFPA. Since the launch of the campaign in 2007, 1,002 fistula victims have been treated, while 230 survivors have been trained in various skills.
