PARAGUAY: Abortion Continues to be Direct Cause of Maternal Deaths

The Nation reported on 14 September that abortion remains one of the first direct causes of maternal death. This was noted by Graciela Avila, a reproductive health expert, during the  Journalists Meeting on Development Agenda beyond 2014, organized by UNFPA with the support of the Union of Journalists of Paraguay (SPP). The event gathered more than 70 journalists from around the country. Avila recalled that in 2008, 1 in 4 women seen for abortion were less than 19 years "and that" 70% of deaths from abortions are women between 25 and 39 years and 30% are adolescents and youth.
