DENMARK: UNFPA Chief’s Op-Ed Addresses Child Marriage

Kristeligt Dagblad on 11 October published a full page opinion piece by Chief of UNFPA Nordic Office, Pernille Fenger, on girls’ rights in relation to the International day of the Girl Child. The article highlights that one out of three girls in development countries are married away before the age of eighteen, and every ninth girl before the age of fifteen. A consequence of child marriages is early pregnancies. As many as 16 million girls in the age of 15-19 give birth every year – and child birth complications are the most common reason for death amongst this group of girls in development countries. The article hence calls for more attention to girls’ rights in the future.
