HAITI: Empowering Haiti to Rebuild Better
The Huffington Post (United States) published a blog on 26 May by Mark Schneider, Senior Vice President and Special Advisor on Latin America for the International Crisis Group on his recent testimony to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee regarding the ongoing recovery efforts in Haiti following the devastating January earthquake. In his testimony, Mr. Schneider called on the U.S. government to strengthen MINUSTAH's mandate by giving it primary responsibility for setting priorities for integration of other UN agencies in the UN country team in order to better carry out its peacekeeping mandate. An early example would be to establish an integrated country team approach to the problem of sexual violence in the camps, coordinating available resources of UNDP, UNFPA, UNIFEM, UNHCR, UNICEF and OCHA.
