HAITI: UN Seeks Participation Of Women In Reconstruction
Terra Portal (Brazil) reported on 11 January that UNFPA recommended the Haitian Government take action to support the participation of youngsters and women in rebuilding the country one year after the earthquake that devastated Haiti on 12 January, 2010, killing 300,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless. UNFPA Representative in Haiti, Igor Bosc, was quoted as urging the Haitian authorities and development agencies to foster "the integration and participation of youth in spheres of decisions," as well as the development of a "participatory policy planning of the territory" that uses "population dynamics and the responsible management of natural resources." His remarks were made during the presentation of a report on the demographic situation of Haiti, showing a decrease in school attendance and employment after the earthquake.
