NIGERIA: Midwives Service Scheme – Elevating the Joy of Motherhood

Daily Trust reported on 17 May on the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS) introduced by the federal government in 2009 to address the then increasing rate of infant and maternal mortality. The UNFPA's country representative to Nigeria, Dr Agathe Lawson while commending the efforts of the Agency, noted that several PHC have been strengthened across the country in one swoop using the Midwives Service Scheme as an arrowhead. Dr. Lawson who said that the UNFPA is concerned about the plight of women and children, stressed that it is pertinent to advocate necessary measures to sustain the gains as well as extend the scope of the scheme until the scourge is reduced.
