UKRAINE: Gender Discrimination a Problem

Multiple media outlets on 12 June reported that human rights protection in Ukraine was discussed during the special Parliamentary hearings organized by the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities and International Relations on 12 June. The hearings entitled “State of Human Rights Observance in Ukraine” gathered representatives of Ukrainian ministries, the High Court and the General Prosecutor Office as well as human rights activists and NGOs representatives.

In her statement at the Parliament, UNFPA Representative in Ukraine Ms. Nuzhat Ehsan expressed concerns about the increasing gender inequality in the country. “There exist discrimination in salaries, the clichéd ideas about the role and the status of women in society remain unchanged and this leads to gender segregation in the professional sphere and insufficient representation of women at the managerial and governing positions, in particular at the Parliament” Ms. Ehsan said.
