INDONESIA: Pregnant Teens Face Stigma, Isolation, Death

The Jakarta Globe reported on 7 June that recent surveys have shown that  “Assistance for teen pregnancies outside of marriage is very poor because society has already declared it to be illegal and forbidden,” according to Hadi Supeno, Chairman of the Indonesian Commission for Child Protection (KPAI). However, Dr. Melania Hidayat, national programme officer for reproductive health at UNFPA, said that “The KPAI survey is only an indication of the behavior of our young people. Local clinics are the main source for data, and they are very unlikely to have accurate figures.” Read: Jakarta Globe
